Western Calligraphy Workshops

These are listings on the GoLibrary website for two workshops I conducted in the month of May 2013, at Serangoon Public Library on Saturday the 11th and Bedok Public Library on Saturday the 18th.

Although two-and-a-half hours long, these sessions are very well attended and participants seem to enjoy themselves. In fact, it is always a rush to cover everything from holding the pen to making basic strokes with it, and from writing the small and capital letters to writing words, names and messages.

These sessions are free of charge, and participants get a calligraphy marker to keep. As an instructor, I am not paid a fee either; this is entirely voluntary work and I get a huge sense of satisfaction when the class goes well.

  2. Dear Mr Ludwig,

I wanted to email you instead, but could not find your email address. I'm looking for Western Calligraphy classes in Singapore, do you know where I can learn? Do you teach? Because I'm trying to see NLB's website for classes but searches showed no results of new classes. Appreciate your help on this, thanks.

    Regards,
    J.K. (ask.qoq at gmail)

    1. Hi, JK

Thanks for asking. No, I'm afraid I don't teach calligraphy classes, apart from the workshops I've been doing at the NLB (I started only this year). The next two workshops will be on Sep 14 (Jurong West) and 21 (Clementi).

      Many thanks!

Do I have to register for the September workshops? If there is, when does it open?

    1. Hi, Sorry I've only just seen your comment. Yes, you'll have to register -- do email joti_omprakash@nlb.gov.sg I don't know if there're still spaces available, though. Thanks for your interest.

  5. Hi Ludwig,

Can you recommend a good book on Western Calligraphy for beginners?

    Thanks!

    1. Sorry for this really late reply, but I think Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons by Winters & Lico is a good introductory book to Italic.

  6. Hi, Mr Tan! I'm Laura, I'm sorta an amateur calligrapher too. I picked up my first Kuretake felt tip when I was around 15 but never got around to doing it because school. JC is tough. I'm fairly decent at Gothic lettering, I'd say. Not great. Just decent. If you look at my blog. I'm really interested in the fonts you do and I was wondering if you were conducting any more classes in 2014. If you are, please contact me. If you aren't, please contact me anyway because I'm really really interested in learning from you.

    1. Hello, Harlequin! Very sorry, I have no more classes schedule for 2014 as the workshops last year were quite tiring to do and I felt I needed a break. But I may be holding one or two in the later half of the year. Take care!

  8. Hi there, will there be anymore workshops coming up? Sad to see that it is hard to get to learn western calligraphy classes in Singapore.

  10. Hi,
Do you have any recommendations to where would be a good place, or any particular resources that are good to pick up calligraphy?

    1. Hi, YongXian. Very sorry for the late reply. If you're on Facebook, do check out our Calligraphers SG page -- there's quite a lot of information on courses and materials there. Yes, there're a few people doing workshops these days.
