Calligraphy Workshop

Every year, I am deeply honoured to be invited by trainee teachers at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, to conduct my Western Calligraphy 101 workshop at their annual Learning Festival.

This Festival is a splendid idea — lessons are cancelled for a large part of the day, and students and staff are encouraged to hold and attend workshops that teach skills not on the Institute’s curriculum, such as life-saving, muffin making, tea appreciation, and balloon sculpting.

I’m proud to report that my calligraphy workshop has been running for five years, and response continues to be very encouraging. Here are two photos from my workshop on 5 September 2012.

  1. Hi! How often do you conduct workshops? I'm interested in learning. How can I get in touch with you? Teresa

    1. Hi, Teresa

I'm doing two workshops via the NLB on 11 and 18 May. You can register via GoLibrary when the schedule is up, I think in March. Look forward to seeing you!

  2. Hi Ludwig,
Great blog! This is such a unique hobby in Singapore. I am interested in taking it up. Looks like the classes are fully registered and I won't be in Singapore during that period. Do you know when the next class will be?

Besides attending the workshop, what other advice would you give to someone starting out?

  4. Hi Ludwig,
Love your blog and the western calligraphy that you are doing. I left a comment earlier on this page but it didn't seem to have gone through. I am interested in picking up western calligraphy and would like to attend your workshops. However, the NLB workshops are fully subscribed. Do you know when the next workshop will be?

What advice would you give for someone who is new to this and is interested in western calligraphy?

    1. Hi, Nathan

Very sorry I didn't see your comment(s) earlier. Yes, the May 11 and 18 workshops are now full. I'll probably be asked to offer more sessions later in the year. I'll remember to post the dates here once they're confirmed.

I suppose the best thing to do as a beginner would be to find a very good book and to learn from it (which was what I did when I started out in December 1986). Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons (Winters & Lico) would be a good start. Also, get a good calligraphy fountain pen, e.g. Sheaffer No Nonsense.

Do also join our Singapore Fountain Pen Lovers Facebook group, if you're not already a member. Quite a few of us have picked up calligraphy.

      Best of luck!

      Ludwig
